CISIR started as a research lab in 2000 in the area of image and signal processing. It became a UTP leading research cluster in 2005. On 15 Dec 2008, CISIR was established as a university research centre. CISIR re-aligned its research focus to UTP Mission Oriented Research in Biomedical Technology in 2009. On 2 August 2012, CISIR became UTP’s first  Centre of Excellence (CoE) after successfully meeting UTP CoE criteria. 

In Feb 2013, UTP applied to MOE for HiCOE status and qualified for site audit that was conducted by MOE HiCoE Panel of Assessors on 21-22 Oct 2013. CISIR successfully passed the site audit and UTP received an offer letter in August 2014 to award CISIR HiCoE status.

CISIR has been recognised by the Ministry of Education (MOE) as the National Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) status focusing on Neuro Chemical Imaging Under Biomedical Image Analysis as its research niche area.

This was announced at a ceremony officiated by Education Minister II, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh on 9 October 2014.

Function of HiCoE
To undertake research and contribute to the advancement of signal & image processing techniques and implementation of embedded systems focusing in biomedical signal and image analysis.

As HiCoE, CISIR will have the following activities:
  • Conduct translational research in neuro chemical imaging that includes brain pathways, mental states and imaging of cartilage.
  • Develop innovative tools for quantitative EEG analysis and portable Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) grading.
  • Establish regional and international collaborative network in neuro informatics, and medical cloud for big data analytics. 
  • Conduct international meetings, workshops, and short courses.
Current research activities include medical imaging analysis of diabetic retinopathy, psoriasis, ulcer wounds, skin pigmentation (vitiligo, melasma), visual evoked potentials (VEP) for clinical research, video surveillance for security, digital elevation model (DEM) analysis for agriculture, and seismic data analysis for geoscience. The research centre also serves the university Mission-Oriented Research in Health.

Research at CISIR explores the use of signal and image processing, computer vision, 3D imaging and computational intelligent techniques. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Singular Value Decomposition, and texture modeling using Markov-Gibbs Random Fields are some of techniques used in our medical analysis research. New imaging modalities such as Multispectral and Magnetic Resonance Imaging are currently being investigated to explore biochemical mechanisms for medical analysis. Fractal analysis and blind deconvolution techniques have also been explored for seismic data analysis.

Implementation of medical devices and video surveillance systems are investigated using latest tools in real-time embedded systems. The use of 3D laser and optical scanning modalities and computational intelligent techniques are explored and developed to enhance printed circuit board assembly inspection performance. The research centre brings together researchers with various expertise and disciplines related to signal and image processing, computer vision and embedded systems.
