Professor Ts. Dr Mohd Fadzil Hassan

Professor Ts. Dr Mohd Fadzil Hassan graduated in 1999 from Colorado State University, USA, with a BSc (cum laude) in Computer Information Systems. He obtained his MSc in Artificial Intelligence in 2001 and PhD in Informatics in 2007 from the University of Edinburgh, UK.

He is currently serving as the Dean of Postgraduate and Research (PGR) since 1 May 2025. Since joining UTP in 2000, Professor Fadzil has held several key leadership roles, including Department Chair (2010–2012), Dean of the Centre for Graduate Studies (2012–2017), Director of the Institute of Autonomous Systems (2020–2024), and Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research, Innovation & Commercialisation (2024–2025).

With extensive expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Blockchain, he is actively engaged in research within these domains and has secured numerous research grants as principal investigator, including FRGS, ERGS, PRGS, among others, from the Malaysian government. He also collaborates internationally, particularly with universities in the Middle East, Korea, and the ASEAN region. Over the course of his career at UTP, he has contributed to 27 research and consultancy projects and authored more than 200 publications, encompassing indexed journal articles, conference proceedings, book chapters, books, and policy papers.

His thought leadership is reflected in his national advisory roles, including appointments by MOSTI (as a panellist for national R&D project funding), MOHE (as a committee member for MyBrain15 funding, National Postgraduate Roadmap, and as a MyRA assessor), Perak State digital economy focus group (as a resource person), MBOT (as an assessor for programme accreditation and compliance), and as an invited speaker at national and international conferences. He has also been appointed by local and international universities to review academic programmes and assessment standards. He is a senior member of IEEE and served on the executive committee of the IEEE Computer Society Malaysia in 2018.

A dedicated mentor and research leader, Professor Fadzil has successfully supervised 22 PhD graduates and registered 8 patents and intellectual properties, earning accolades at national and international product exhibitions. His innovations demonstrate the application of advanced technologies to real-world challenges. Notable examples include the Intelligent Constructability Review (i-CR), co-developed with PETRONAS Group Project Delivery, and the Halal Transparent Traceability System (HATTS), piloted with MS3 Agri–ventures Corporation, a chocolate manufacturer in the Davao region of the Philippines. In teaching and learning, he has designed and delivered 11 modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and was twice honoured with UTP’s Effective Teaching Delivery Award (2010 and 2011). His commitment to fostering innovation among students is evident in his mentorship of student-led projects, which have won national championships at the PLUS MUFORS Road Reels Challenge (2011), International OSS Creative Multimedia Development Competition (2011), and achieved runners-up positions at the BSN Inter-Varsity Social Venture Challenge (2010, 2011) and ENACTUS Malaysia National Competition (2013).
