Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) offers a structured industrial training programme spanning
two semesters, designed to provide students with comprehensive and meaningful exposure to real-world engineering environments prior to graduation. This extended internship features clearly defined learning outcomes, continuous assessment, and close collaboration with industry partners, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical, professional settings.
For undergraduate students from the
Chemical Engineering Department, the programme offers placements across a wide range of industries, including:
-
Petrochemical and oil & gas companies
-
Renewable energy and biofuel production facilities
-
Water and wastewater treatment plants
-
Food and beverage manufacturing industries
-
Agriculture and agro-processing industries
-
Oleochemical and specialty chemical plants
-
Pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
-
Process engineering and chemical manufacturing plants
-
Environmental and waste management services
-
Advanced materials and polymer industries
Internship placement in oleochemical, specialty chemical industries, process and oil & gas-related operations.
Through hands-on engineering tasks, professional skills development, and exposure to industry standards, safety practices, and sustainability considerations, students gain valuable practical experience that strengthens both technical competencies and professional readiness. By aligning industrial placements with current and emerging industry needs, the internship programme ensures that graduates are equipped with relevant skills, real-world experience, and enhanced employability as they transition into the professional engineering workforce.
Professional Development Through Student Internship Training (SIT) and Student Internship Project (SIP)
Through SIT, students gain workplace exposure, professional discipline, and an understanding of industry practices. The SIP requires students to complete an industry-based project, analyse real engineering problems, and present their findings to industry and academic supervisors. These structured presentations and reports strengthen technical communication, critical thinking, and confidence, preparing students to meet professional engineering expectations.
Students transition from learners to industry-ready engineering graduates, equipped with technical competence, professional maturity, and the ability to communicate engineering solutions effectively in real-world settings.
International Internship
Beyond Malaysia, students may complete internships in Japan, Australia, China, Austria, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom, gaining global industrial experience. Participation in prestigious international opportunities such as the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team internship highlights our students' technical competence, professionalism, and ability to collaborate effectively within multicultural and international engineering teams.
