Muhammad Nur Aiman Haja Maidin, the eldest of two siblings, grew up in Johor Darul Takzim, the son of a skilled chef and a retired nurse. From an early age, Aiman displayed a passion for learning, a sharp intellect, and an unyielding drive to succeed. These qualities shaped his extraordinary journey, culminating in his recognition as the recipient of the Chancellor’s Gold Award 2024 at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

A Promising Start

Aiman’s story began in Johor Bahru, where he attended Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Rinting 3. He later continued his studies at Sekolah Menengah Sains Kota Tinggi, a foundation that prepared him for his pursuit of higher education. When the opportunity arose to study at UTP on a PETRONAS scholarship, Aiman embraced it wholeheartedly, enrolling in the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme.

Thriving in a World of Opportunities

Over his five years at UTP, Aiman’s life was a harmonious blend of rigorous academics, leadership roles, and community contributions. Despite the challenges of maintaining a perfect academic record, he achieved the Dean’s List Award every semester and graduated with First-Class Honours.

However, Aiman’s accomplishments went far beyond academic excellence. He emerged as a charismatic student leader, serving as the Deputy President of the UTP Student Representative Council in 2021. His leadership shone brightest during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he successfully implemented seven key initiatives to address student welfare.

In 2023, Aiman led as the President of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Student Society (E3S2). Under his leadership, the society became a model of innovation at UTP, organising events such as the Tug of War Battlebots, Hackathon E3S2, and STEM outreach programmes for secondary school students.

Pushing the Boundaries of Innovation

Aiman’s passion for innovation was evident in his groundbreaking research. During his internship in France, he developed a project entitled “Implementation of Artificial Intelligence through Hand Landmark Detection and Voice Recognition”, which earned him the Best Paper Award at an international conference in India.

His Final Year Project, “Automatic Computer-Aided Detection of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Alcohol Use Disorder,” received global recognition, securing gold medals at prestigious competitions, including:

  • ENNOVATE Innovation Summit 2024 in Poland,
  • International Science Technology and Engineering Competition (ISTEC) 2024 in Indonesia, and
  • World Invention Creativity Olympic 2024 in South Korea, where he triumphed over 1,000 participants from across the globe.

A Heart for the Community

Aiman’s success was not only measured by accolades but also by the lives he touched. He led initiatives such as the Arduino Workshop and IEEE Maker Inspire, which introduced electronics and programming to over 100 primary and secondary school students. As a speaker for UTP’s Young Scientist Camp and Pathway Peek, he inspired students from MARA Junior Science Colleges and boarding schools to pursue careers in engineering.

Looking Ahead

Today, Aiman is ready to make his mark as an Instrument Engineer at PETRONAS Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (PFLNG) in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. As he embarks on this new chapter, he carries with him a legacy of resilience, curiosity, and compassion.

From a young boy in Johor to a celebrated graduate at UTP, Muhammad Nur Aiman Haja Maidin’s journey is a testament to the power of determination and the opportunities that arise from embracing challenges. His story inspires not only his peers at UTP but also the wider community, proving that with passion and perseverance, the sky is the limit.
