UTP - Malaysia's only private university in the QS Asia Top 100

(24 October 2018)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has done the country proud when it made the 2019 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings top 100 list for the first time.

It now ranks 99th compared to 101st last year, and is the only private university in Malaysia placed in the top 100.

The 99th position is, by a clear margin, the University's highest achievement in the QS Asia University Rankings.  Since its debut in 2014, the university has improved significantly in the rankings by leapfrogging 92 places.

The criteria of evaluation for the 2019 QS Asia University Rankings have increased from ten to eleven domains, with the addition of international research network.

According to its Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, analysis into the ranking results showed significant improvements in four indicators, namely papers per faculty, international faculty and inbound and outbound exchange students which placed the university into the top 100.  UTP is the best performing university in papers per faculty as it is placed 74th regionally.

The first indicator provides an indication of the overall research productivity of the university, the second reflects the university's internationalisation and the final indicates the size of each institution's inbound and outbound student exchange programmes.

"Moving forward, we will continue our primary focus in providing superior academic programmes, innovative research and enriching student experiences in our quest towards global prominence.

Our goal now is to claim the top 50 spot in the QS Asia University Rankings by 2020," he said.
