UTP to Organise National-Level Mandarin Debate Competition
(7 September 2018)
UTP and its Mandarin Debate Unit will be organising the 4th Northern Malaysia Mandarin Debate Tournament (NMMDT 4.0) from 12-16 September at its campus in Seri Iskandar.
This was announced at a press conference by the Perak Committee Chairman for Youth and Sports Development YB Howard Lee Chuan How. Also present were UTP Director of the Centre for Student Development Associate Professor Dr Nurlidia Mansor, NMMDT4.0 Advisor, Dr Oh Pei Ching and NMMDT4.0 Project Director Lai Yong Lin.
The NNMDT adopts Oregon debate style, where debaters use ‘court based’ one-to-one questioning method during the tournament.
The Perak Youth and Sports Development Committee will work closely with UTP and the UTP Mandarin Unit of Debate Union to promote this annual program that creates a conducive environment for youths to meet, interact and build their social network. For years, this annual debate tournament serves as a platform of ideas and knowledge exchange among university debaters
“In line with the Perak state’s youth development agenda, The Perak state government and the Youth & Sports Development committee shows its full support by allocating RM 15,000 to the organising fund of NMMDT4.0. It is our greatest hope that this program can be continued year after year, inspiring youths in Perak,” said YB Howard.
This year 20 debate teams will participate, 17 from local universities while 3 are international universities. The winning team will walk away with a cash prize of RM2000.
