CONVO CSR: Kayak Expedition 2017
On Saturday, 30th September 2017 and Sunday, 1st October 2017, the ConvoCSR organising committee has organised “UTP ConvoCSR Kayak Expedition 2017 – Karai to Bota”.
PECIPTA has been organised by the Higher Education Ministry since 2001. It aims to provide public and private universities to not only showcase their ideas and innovations but to compete at the national and international levels. It also aims to enhance networking and collaboration among its participants, industry and others potential players to further explore and commercialise their products.
This brand new event is part of UTP 20th iversary and UTP 17th Convocation celebration. A total of 40 kayakers consisting of UTP staff and students cruising along Perak River for two days from Victoria Bridge, Karai to Bota.
The event was officiated and flagged off at the historical 117 years old Victoria Bridge, Karai by ADUN Chenderoh, YB Dato’ Haji Zainun Bin Mat Noor which is also President of Chenderoh Recreational and Tourism Club. The participants were given the opportunity to cross the bridge to admire the artistic and beautiful construction of the bridge.
The kayak expedition began at 8.30 am and their first pit stop was at Perak Royal Town, Kuala Kangsar. The committee and participants were lucky as both MP of Kuala Kangsar, YB Datin Mastura Mohd Yazid and ADUN Kuala Kangsar, YB Encik Maslin Sham B Razman were available to have a meet and greet session with them at the pit stop. The expedition then continued for another 3 hours for the kayakers to reach Dataran Amanjaya Manong.
Meanwhile at Dataran Amanjaya Manong that morning, a series of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) activities were being conducted to forty (40) selected students around Manong area. They were exposed to STEM activities with the aim to increase their interest towards Science and Mathematics subject, enhance creativity using technology and develop inner self-confidence.
En Mohamad Zuraimi B. Razali, Penghulu Mukim Senggang act as representative of ADUN Manong, YB Dato' Mohamad Kamil Bin Dato' Haji Shafie to distribute the CSR items to the forty (40) underprivileged students consisting of school bags and RM100 cash.
On the second day of the event, En Muhammad Syazwan Amarjit Bin Abdullah, Chairman of UTP 17th Convocation flagged off the kayakers to continue their expedition to Bota. The kayakers reached Bota at 12.30pm which is 30 minutes ahead of their targeted arrival time.
The CSR and STEM activities were also continued at SMK Dato’ Abdul Rahman Yaakub with fifty-five (55) selected students from around Bota area. YB Dato' Nasarudin Bin Hashim, ADUN Bota was invited to officiate the Closing Ceremony of UTP ConvoCSR Kayak Expedition 2017 – Karai to Bota.
During the two-day event, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has donated school bags together with RM100 cash to ninety-five (95) underprivileged school children from 19 schools around Manong and Bota. It is hoped that with this contribution, the school children will be motivated to go to school, attend all the school activities, thus achieving better results in their school exams. As for the kayakers, they have paddled a total of seventy (70) kilometers along Perak River which can be considered as the longest kayak event UTP had organised.
The main sponsors of this event were PETRONAS, Dixson FA Engineering Sdn Bhd, Advance Altimas Sdn Bhd, Aseptec Sdn Bhd, and Ana Synergy Sdn Bhd. Other sponsors include donations from PETRONAS Staff, UTP Staff, UTP Alumni and individuals through ‘School Kit Campaign’.
