A United Voice for Global Issues
(25 - 27 September 2017)
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) recently hosted the second ASEAN Student Forum 2017 (ASF 2017).
Themed 'Youth of Today Leaders of Tomorrow, Ideas of Today Changes of Tomorrow', the event was organised by UTP ASEAN Students Association and supported by the Higher Education Ministry.
Its Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching officiated the event. Also present were UTP Vice Chancellor Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim and UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor, Student Affairs and Alumni, Associate Professor Dr Nor Hisham Hamid.
The three-day event gathered more than 200 youths from ASEAN and Asian countries which included Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Sudan, India and China. It aims to nurture the next generation of future leaders.
It also provides opportunities for inspiring youths to learn about developing issues and trends in the ASEAN region, discuss and debate on the best practices to overcome these issues. This year ASF 2017 is focussing on humanitarian issues related to social, environment, politics, economy and media.
One of the forum's features was 'Voices of ASEAN' where a representative from each of the ASEAN country was selected to voice out his perspectives on any issues in his country or in the ASEAN region. Other segments featured were keynote addresses by experienced speakers, topical debates and townhall meeting.
The forum ended with a gala dinner which provided an excellent opportunity for delegates and guests to network.
The UTP ASEAN Students Association was established last year with the aim to boost ties between ASEAN students and integrate different ASEAN communities into a one diversified entity.
Apart from academic excellence, UTP encourages its students to organise and take part in various co-curricular activities and community programmes. This is in line with UTP's aspiration to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities.
Through organising such forum, it will help develop students' soft skills through teamwork, exchanging of ideas, tolerating with one's differences and diversity and building confidence in sharing information.
ASF 2017 will also help to strengthen UTP's networking and collaboration with its other ASEAN counterparts to support the university's mission towards becoming a globally prominent university.
