 UTP Crowns Champion in 2014 Dis.Rupt.Edu (15 – 16 January, 2014)

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) emerged as champion and bagged two other prizes for the university category in the Dis.Rupt.Edu competition held at UTP from 15 to 16 January 2014.   Dis.Rupt.Edu is an application development competition, or  better known as "Startup", which emulates the famous TechCrunch in the United States.   The event was held for the first time in 2012 at SEGi University.

The three top teams from UTP were Stutter Aid, Diversity and The Victory.  As champion, Stutter Aid walked away with a replica cup, RM5,000.00 and an all-expenses-paid trip to TechCrunch DisRupt 2014, San Francisco USA, worth more than RM20,000.00.  The first runner-up went to Diversity winning RM3,000.00 and a plaque, while the second runner-up belonged to The Victory, winning RM 2,000.00 and a plaque.

For the junior’s category, Intan Genius of SMK Tengku Ampuan Intan, Terengganu was announced the champion winning RM1,000.00 and a plaque, the first runner-up went to Excelsior, SMK Sultan Yussuf, Perak receiving RM750.00 and a plaque while the second runner-up prize of RM500.00 and a plaque went to SMK (FELDA) Bandar Baru Serting, Negeri Sembilan.

This year, Dis.Rupt.Edu successfully attracted participation from 22 teams from various universities, as well as 10 from secondary schools.  Among those who participated were Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Tenaga Nasional, UiTM Shah Alam, SMK Lepar Hilir, Pahang, SMK Pondok Upeh, Pulau Pinang and SMK Tengku Ampuan Intan, Terengganu.  This year, UTP collaborated with Anise Asia Cloud Sdn. Bhd to host the 2014 Dis.Rupt.Edu.

YBhg. Datuk Ir. (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hj Hashim, UTP Vice Chancellor in his speech said that Dis.Rupt.Edu was organised with the aim to support UTP’s efforts towards cultivating innovativeness. This is because it allowed students to apply skills learnt in class, such as thinking out of the box, presentation and entrepreneurship skills.

The concept of the competition allowed participants to pitch their products to judges who are real entrepreneurs and technology experts with vast industrial background. The judges not only evaluate the products but also the participants’ pitching skills as well as their confidence in sharing their thoughts and ideas. It also provided an excellent opportunity for participants to share experiences, best practices and views from different perspectives in extending the potentials of their innovation.

Ms. Carrine Teoh, Head of Product Development & Marketing Department, CyberSecurity Malaysia in her opening speech said that in order to be globally competitive, students must be able to put pieces of knowledge and information together in order to come up with something fresh and new. They need to master creative thinking, reasoning and innovating skills. Only then, their ideas would convince and benefit others. Also present at the opening of Dis.Rupt.Edu were En Suhaimee Abu Hasan, President Anise Asia Cloud Sdn Bhd; Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Fadzil Hassan, Dean, Centre of Graduate Studies, UTP, and Associate Professor Dr. Wan Fatimah Wan Ahmad, Chairman of Dis.Rupt.Edu.  The ceremony was closed by En. Zalizan Mohamed Noh, Head of Business Development, Infotech Industry Division.

UTP’s achievements in Dis.Rupt.Edu and its commitment in organising the event have demonstrated UTP’s vital role in promoting research, development and innovation for the nation, in line with its aspiration to become a reputable research university.
