Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Virtalis Limited and Thames Technology Sdn Bhd to establish a Centre of Excellence for Virtual Reality (VR) at UTP.

UTP Vice Chancellor, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, Virtalis Managing Director, Mr. David Cockburn-Price and Thames Technology Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Encik Mohd Kamarul Hisham  Hashim signed the MOU on behalf of the three organisations

 


The ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Minister of Education, Mr P. Kamalanathan.

This collaboration led to the establishment of a Virtual Reality Lab and GeoVisionary visualisation centre at UTP. Its specific objective is to develop talent and certified professionals in the VR areas to UTP students, as well as to enhance the design, training and maintenance procedure in engineering and oil and gas industry.

The MOU is also expected to see an enhancement from the view-point of university-industry collaboration in driving cutting edge research to meet market demand as well as to support local industries and communities through the joint research effort between UTP and Virtalis. This possibility will be explored by jointly enhancing the technology with the industry’s standard measurement and testing equipment to support the teaching and R&D activities at UTP.

With UTP’s partnership with Virtalis and Thames Technology, there will be many R&D opportunities for UTP to work with, especially in the areas where they can directly contribute to the building of virtual reality and advanced visualisation facilities and resources in Malaysia.
