 Students show off their science and engineering skills (6 and 7 August 2014)

​More than 500 students got to show off their science and engineering skills at the 33rd Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX 33) held at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). The exhibition’s categories included Final Year Project, Engineering Team Project, Post Graduate Project, Young Innovation Challenge, Open Innovation Challenge, Most Creative Idea Award, Most Innovative Award, I-Gen Award, People’s Choice Award, Project Director’s Choice Award and Best Department Award.

Organised since 1997, the event showcased inventions and innovations from primary, secondary and university students from UTP’s surrounding community.   Some of the inventions and innovations exhibited were Automatic Qibla Direction Finder for Blind People (QiBlind), Visual Approach for Educating Autistic Children, Water-LESS Washing Machine, Solar Powered Anti-mosquito Device Focused and Automated Diagnosis for Supraspinatus Tendon.

“Participation in SEDEX provides a platform for UTP students to demonstrate their creativity and cultivate the culture of innovativeness, in line with UTP’s vision to become a leader in technology education and centre for creativity and innovation,” said Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic at the opening ceremony of SEDEX33.  Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil further informed that since it was first held in 1997, “SEDEX has successfully produced potential future inventors and innovators, delivered in the form of prototypes, inventions, new research methodologies and approaches in multiple fields of expertise.” 

“It has always been SEDEX’s aim to nurture and develop talents from a very young age, who are innovative and passionate about research.  We are hopeful that through SEDEX, we will be able to produce pool of young researchers from which science leaders will emerge, who will find new solutions to tackle global issues in the future,”  said Dr. Nurul Izma Mohammed, Chairperson of SEDEX33.
