An inaugural ceremony to appoint the first Adjunct Professor for Civil Engineering Department Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and UTP, Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie Ayob, was held at Impiana Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on 10 February 2014.
The event was graced by YBhg Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, Vice Chancellor of UTP and Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of UTP.
The event started off with the opening remarks by Assoc Prof Ir Dr Mohd Shahir Liew, Head of Civil Engineering Department, UTP and Offshore Engineering Centre UTP (OECU), followed by YBhg Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim’s speech.
YBhg Datuk in his speech congratulated Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie for becoming the first Adjunct Professor for Civil Engineering Department and also for UTP. YBhg Datuk said that this appointment marked a historic occasion for the university as it is a testimonial of good collaboration efforts between UTP and the industry.
Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie Ayob is currently a Technical Authority (Structural) at PETRONAS Group Technology Solution (GTS). His first stint with PETRONAS was way back in 1992 as a Senior Engineer for PETRONAS Research Institute (PRI) (now known as PETRONAS Research Sdn Bhd). He is a prominent figure in SKG11 fraternity and he plays an important role to steer this skill group to a greater heights. His involvement with UTP started in 2007 as one of the Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) members for the Civil Engineering Department. He served as the IAP member for the department until 2011.
YBhg Datuk later presented an appointment letter to Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie to officially mark his appointment as an Adjunct Professor.
Afterwards, Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie Ayob delivered his acceptance speech and a short seminar entitled “Managing Integrity and Reliability of Existing Offshore Structures: Requalification Efforts and Challenges”.
Prof Ir Dr Ahmad Fadzil in his closing remarks hoped that Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie’s appointment will spur further the networking and linkages between UTP’s academic staff and the industry, particularly PETRONAS. He also hoped that Prof (Adj) Mohd Sapihie will continuously share his vast knowledge and experiences with all UTP academic staff and students in other future events, such as public lectures or seminars.
Also present at the ceremony were UTP academic staff, SKG11-UTP Steering Committee members as well as PETRONAS GTS staff.
