On 21 and 22 September 2013, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) organised the Young Programmers Camp 2013: Coding The Future (YPC2013) for students to further explore the world of technology in a more interactive, fun and upbeat way.

YPC13 is the university’s community-outreach project concentrating on secondary school students in UTP’s surrounding vicinity.  For this project, the students were selected from SMK Ahmad Boestamam, Sitiawan and SMK Seri Iskandar, Bota.  The two-day camp was organised by Syntech Organisation, UTP’s students IT club, and supported by Faculty of Science and Information Technology (FSIT) UTP.

The objectives of this programme are to stimulate students’ creativity and innovation in IT as well as to promote UTP academic programmes to secondary students, namely Information & Communication Technology and Business Information Systems.  The students were taught internet programming, commonly known as website development.

Although many languages are used to generate a functional website, the students were only exposed to the core languages, which are the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), to make it easier for them to understand how a website is built. The module is based on an online learning platform, a website dedicated to teach people, especially beginners how to code.

Other activities were also carried out during the camp.  In addition to addressing and enhancing the students’ creative-thinking and problem-solving aptitudes, these activities were designed to exercise and train the students’ soft skills such as leadership, team-work, communication, listening skills.

All the activities were coordinated by UTP students with the assistance from 20 Information Technology (IT) students from Kolej Universiti Sultan Azlan Shah (KUISAS), Kuala Kangsar.  At the end of the event, a competition on web development was conducted to test students’ understanding and encourage them to be competent students.

En. Syed Roshidon Syed Abdullah, Perak Tengah District Education Officer; Encik Mior Darul Ikram Kamarun Zaman, Manjung District Education Officer and Dr. Jafreezal Jaafar, Head of Computer and Information Sciences Department, UTP were among the guests who attended the event.
