UTP Sponsored Two Schools in Malaysian Technology Expo 2013 (MTE 2013) (21 - 23 February 2013)

Faculty of Science and Information Technology (FSIT) of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) recently sponsored two schools, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tronoh and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Seri Iskandar to participate in the Malaysian Technology Expo 2013 (MTE 2013).

SMK Seri Iskandar and SK Tronoh teams at MTE 2013

Supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), this annual event is a platform for young inventors to showcase their invention and innovation to the local and international public.   The objectives of MTE2013 participation are:

  • To provide educational experience to the students through participation at science and technology exhibitions
  • To introduce students to the world of science fair
  • To develop the competency level of the students to participate in national and international level science competitions
  • To develop students’ soft skills through the communications with the judges, trade visitors and public
  • To expand the schools’ network with other schools and institutional bodies in MTE 2013

SK Tronoh and SMK Seri Iskandar were selected to take part in the MTE 2013 as their projects entitled “Green Scarecrow” and “G-Clothes Organizer” respectively, showed potential to compete at the national or international invention and innovation competitions.

Prior to competing in MTE 2013, these projects participated in the previous UTP 30th Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX) and won medals at the Young Inventors Category (YIC).  YIC is a category for both primary and secondary schools and was aimed to create young inventors in the field of science, engineering and technology.

For the school category, 10 MARA Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) and 2 secondary schools participated in MTE 2013.  SK Tronoh team was the only primary school who had to compete against MRSM.  Although SK Tronoh and SMK Seri Iskandar did not win any medals, the students gained valuable first-hand experience in exhibiting their projects and competing at the national/international level.  This experience will give them the inspiration to grow and develop further in R&D activities.

The schools’ project description are as follows :

School : Sekolah Kebangsaan Tronoh
Project Title : Green Scarecrow

This invention is to replace the motionless traditional scarecrow. Due to animal rights movement, humans are less hostile to birds which cause the birds to be used to humans’ presence. Predator bird scarecrow scares the birds away. The novel scare crow imitates the real predator bird by flapping its wings and moves left and right. The movement is created from the wind energy which blows onto a set of wheel blades. A special mechanism is used to convert the rotary motion of wheel into the rocking motion of flapping wings. Wind direction changes the orientation of the wheel blades causing the birds to turn left or right. The bird scarecrow will be decorated to look like a real bird using waste materials. This is a total GREEN WASTE TECHNOLOGY solution where it uses completely recycle items and the wind force to create the kinetic energy, hence to move the predator birds.

Project Title : G-Clothes

G-Clothes is an automated clothes drying system to overcome the problems of high labour usage just to perform simple jobs and odorless clothes created from an indoor drying.  “G” stands for “Genius”.  This engineering design is an invention consists of several sensors such as the humidity, water and temperature to control the motors and blowers.  The system is to be installed indoor where the clothes rail will be automatically pushed in and out based on the weather.
