Signing Ceremony of the Joint Collaboration Agreement between Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS and Transwater Tenaga Sdn Bhd (8 February 2012)
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), the first and only private university in Malaysia that received 5 Star Rating under the Malaysian Research Assessment System (MyRA), today signed a joint collaboration agreement with Transwater Tenaga Sdn. Bhd. (Transwater Tenaga), to pursue collaboration in the field of research and other areas of mutual interest.
For the signing of the agreement, UTP was represented by its Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim while Transwater Tenaga was represented by its Executive Director, Mr Tan U-Jiun.
“As the university continues its journey towards excellence, the creation of partnerships and synergies with the industry is a key initiative of the university. UTP is always mindful of the importance of industry-university linkage and that this factor is the differentiator for success. This is to ensure that UTP remains competitive and relevant to the industry and nation at large, besides ascertaining global recognition,” said YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim.
“The university is extremely appreciative of the support from the industry, including Transwater Tenaga, and hope that by leveraging on each other’s talent, research resources and technical capabilities, we would continue to work in areas of mutual interest,” added YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim.
“Transwater Tenaga looks forward to building a symbiotic bridge between academia and the industry which is essential in the development of an industrialised nation,” echoed Mr Tan U-Jiun.
The signing of this agreement between both parties is a result of the signing of a MOU between TTSB and the university in October 2012.
Also present at the ceremony were, among others, YBhg. Dato’ Amer Hamzah, Director of Transwater Tenaga; Mr Kong Seng Huat, Chief Operating Officer of Transwater Tenaga; and En. Anuar Ismail, Business Development Consultant of Transwater Tenaga.

Transwater Tenaga is in the business of EPCC contracting and provision of engineering and project development services for the oil and gas industry. To further its involvement in the energy industry, it has already embarked into research and development activities in biodiesel, biomass and power generation. The collaboration with UTP is in the area of catalysis to enhance gasoline production. It is an added area of R&D for both TW and UTP.
Transwater Tenaga is committed to support the national aspiration of building closer relationship between academia and the industry. It will provide a more intense R&D to ultimately own new technologies that can be commercialised. Through this collaboration, Transwater Tenaga also provides industrial experiences to the academic staff as well as to students to enhance their exposure to practical realities in the application of scientific knowledge.
