Signing Ceremony Agreement for the Sponsorship of a Professorial Chair in Deepwater and Subsea Technology between Technip Geoproduction (M) Sdn Bhd and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (25 February 2013)
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Technip Geoproduction (M) Sdn. Bhd. signed an agreement today for the establishment of the Technip Chair in Deepwater and Subsea Technology, marking a milestone in spearheading research excellence and providing enhanced learning experience at the university.
For the signing, UTP was represented by its Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim, while Technip was represented by its Senior Vice President Asia Pacific, Mr. Lim Kwee Keong.
The agreement is a testament of Technip’s commitment in providing its expertise and knowledge to strengthen UTP’s position in research and development in Deepwater Technology, which is one of UTP’s niche areas or Mission Oriented Research. The establishment of the professorial chair was the result of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between PETRONAS and Technip for the collaboration on capability building and education in August 2011.
Professor Dr. Allan Magee, an expert in Hydrodynamics from Technip and previously one of UTP’s Industry Advisory Panels, is appointed to the Chair in Deepwater and Subsea Technology. His expertise will assist in improving the teaching curriculum of Deepwater and Subsea Technology at postgraduate and undergraduate levels, in addition to providing support in research activities in the same area and contribute towards building research excellence.
In his speech during the signing ceremony, Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim said that UTP hoped other top-notch and leading industry players will support the university with the aim to steer UTP academic and R&D programmes towards international recognition.
Mr. Lim Kwee Keong said that technology is a core element within Technip and innovation is the driving force behind its success going forward. With Dr. Magee’s vast experience and knowledge, he is very confident that Dr. Magee will be able to guide UTP on its roadmap to becoming a Centre of Excellence in Deepwater Research & Development.
“Building on the long term relationship between PETRONAS and Technip which began in the early 80s in Malaysia, I believe our strategic collaboration with UTP will take all of us further. I look forward to a fruitful partnership to jointly develop a quality and technically skilled workforce for the oil and gas industry, in line with the Government's Economic Transformation Programme." he concluded.
Apart from Technip Professorial Chair, the three other chairs that UTP have are the Shell Chair in Petroleum Geoscience, Schlumberger Chair in Petroleum Engineering and Mitsubishi Chair in Green Technology.
