 PETRONAS CHAIRMAN CONFERS DEGREES TO 1147 UTP GRADUATES (27 OCTOBER 2013)

YBhg Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Chairman of PETRONAS conferred doctoral, masters and bachelor degrees to 1147 students at the university’s 13th Convocation Ceremony held on 27 October 2013.





Out of the 1147 students, 157 are postgraduate students from Chemical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Process Integration, Asset Management & Maintenance, Electronic Systems Engineering, Petroleum Geoscience and Petroleum Engineering.



The remaining 990 students were undergraduates from various programmes namely Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Business Information Systems, Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geoscience. 



YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, UTP Pro-Chancellor and President & Group Chief Executive of PETRONAS, UTP Board of Directors, PETRONAS Management Committee Members and representatives from various universities were also present to commemorate the event.​





Speaking on the occasion, YBhg Tan Sri Sidek reminded the graduates that convocation is not the end of their relationship with UTP, but the beginning of a new one.  YBhg Tan Sri Sidek also mentioned that every graduate owes the alma-mater for what they are today.  Thus, graduates should preserve their bond  with the university and give back to their alma mater by actively contributing towards making the University a better place to seek knowledge.



YBhg Tan Sri Sidek further added that as graduates, they will always be associated with UTP.  Hence, it is their responsibility to ensure their actions at the workplace safeguard and further enhance the reputation of the UTP brand.



On another note, YBhg Tan Sri Sidek stated that as one of the institutions of higher education focused on engineering and technology, UTP needs to continually monitor the challenges ahead and reassess its role in order to remain competitive and relevant in the fast evolving national education sector. Efforts to upgrade the research activities must be implemented so that UTP can continue its meaningful research contribution to the national economic development and attract the best talent and institutions for collaboration.



This year’s Chancellor Awards were presented to Lee Hsiu Eik (Civil Engineering Programme) for Gold, Siti Noor Ashikin Mustaffa (Petroleum Geoscience Programme) for Silver and Yong Jenn (Chemical Engineering Programme) for Bronze.



Other award recipients included Nguyen Thi Hoai Vy from Chemical Engineering Programme for Best International Undergraduate Student Award, Muhammad Farooq from Chemical Engineering Programme for Alumni Award for Best Research (Doctor of Philosophy’s Category) and Jawad Humayun from Electrical & Electronic Engineering for Alumni Award for Best Research (Master’s Category).​

In conjunction with the convocation ceremony, various events were organised. 



Academic & Research Exhibition (ACADREX) is an event that features UTP’s academic exhibition and innovation forum.  One of the main highlights of ACADREX 2013 was competitions that were held from 25 – 26 October 2013.  The competitions were divided into 3 categories namely Primary School, Secondary School and Family. These competitions had attracted participants from various schools and surrounding community in Perak.  They were organised with the objectives of inculcating a culture of innovation amongst young Malaysians in line with UTP’s vision of becoming a Leader in Technology Education & Centre for Creativity & Innovation.



Saturday, 26 October 2013 also saw the launching of Solar Field Testing Facility at UTP Centre of Innovative Nanostructures & Nanodevices (COINN). This facility would allow for real-time performance measurement of Solar PV in real solar conditions to be conducted. The establishment of this facility is timely as the researchers are now moving towards developing building-integrated PV (BIPV) in the form of power generating windows in the initiative towards up-scaling the prototype to near ready for commercialisation.



UTP and its Students Representative Council also organised its annual event, the ConvoFair at its campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar from 25 October to 27 October 2013, featuring various activities that included paintball, kayak and performances by local popular artistes such as Hyper Act and Forteen.​​​​
