​UTP Emerged Champion In The DIS.RUPT.EDU 2012

REAdroid Team of UTP walked away with RM7, 000.00 of cash prizes, medal and certificate when they were announced as the Champion in the Dis.Rupt.Edu 2012.  The team also won a paid trip to San Francisco, USA to compete in the 2013 TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, America.

REAdroid team was represented by Nur Intan Adhani Muhamd Nazri and Mohd Ihsan Alimi Mohd Filus who showcased their creativity and innovation with their winning project entitled Augmented Reality (AR) Advertisement on Android.  With this innovation, it will overcome the limitation of physical advertisement since AR advertisement is more interactive and engaging for viewers.

Dis.Rupt.Edu 2012 was held at SEGi University and organized by Anise Asia Cloud Sdn Bhd.  It is based on TechCrunch Disrupt USA, one of the most anticipated technology conferences in the US.

The two-day event is an initiative under the EduCloud program – a cloud-based infrastructure to promote applications and engagement strategies to enhance teaching, learning and research capabilities beyond the campus vicinity.  Technology enthusiasts and investors mingle with the participants to help them develop their ideas and inspire them to achieve excellence.

Dis.Rupt.Edu 2012 featured 3 main elements:

  1. Dis.Rupt.Edu 2012 Conference - It provided a platform for College and University students to explore their creativity and showcase their creations and engaged with some of the biggest names in the IT industry.

  2. Startup Alley - Students exhibited their creative and innovative projects and also had the opportunity to present their projects in front of highly qualified judges from various IT backgrounds.

  3. Startup Battlefield - The heart of the event where students launch their products before a live audience, in front of a panel of expert judges.

From 60 participations, only 30 were selected for Battlefield.  Out of 30 projects, 11 projects from Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) were shortlisted.  For the final round, 10 outstanding projects were selected and 5 were from CIS.

Semantic based Text Summarization for Single Document on Android Mobile

It implements a semantic and syntactic based summarization in a text summarizer to solve the overload problem whilst providing a more coherent summary.  It integrates WordNet into the system to yield a more efficient and accurate algorithm that is able to condense lengthy documents into summarized text, better than alternative models as well as implementing it on a mobile device.

Augmented Circuit: an AR application for electricity learning

A student workbook to learn about electricity through the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology. Students can read the book naturally, however, when they point the book to the camera, the 3D or video of the related topic will be displayed on the computer screen.

Internship Workflow Management System

Students’ industrial internship programme is a career-related professional work experiences that can enhance student’s education by applying the knowledge and skills in the workplace.  However, the existing internship workflow system is based on manual bases.  A number of problems can be identified such as loss of internship students’ information detail, high printing cost, students monitoring as well as too time consuming and also can cause weakness in the system.  In order to address these issues, the Internship Workflow Management System, an online web-based system, will be developed.

Sang Kancil and the Crocodiles are Malaysian traditional storybook used to teach children to count numbers.
