Seminar on Polymer Reaction Engineering 2008 (13 - 15 Aug 2008)
A seminar on Polymer Reaction Engineering has been organised by the Chemical Engineering from 13th – 15th August 2008. The seminar aimed to enlighten participants from both the academic and industry sectors with essentials of industrial polymer reaction engineering in order to provide the link between the fundamentals of polymerisation kinetics and polymer microstructure achieved in the reactor.
The speaker was Professor Dr. rer. nat. Hans-Ulrich Moritz, a professor and Managing Director of Institute of Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, University of Hamburg. This seminar was held in conjunction with his visit to Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS as a visiting professor. Professor Moritz has extensive knowledge and research interests in the area of polymer reaction engineering and polymer reactor safety, optimisation of polymer reaction processes, development of new reactors, polymerisation kinetics, online-monitoring and modeling of polymer reactions.
There are 65 participants, who consisted of process technologists/ engineers from polymer industries, researchers, PhD students and academic staff members from PETRONAS OPUs and local universities, i.e. Vinyl Chloride Malaysia, Ethylene and Polyethylene Malaysia, MTBE Malaysia, PRSB, PETLIN, GTS, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS who had participated in this three-day seminar.During the seminar, several topics on industrial polymer reaction engineering had been covered. These topics consisted of review of polymerisation mechanisms and kinetics, MWD of polymers, rheology, polymer reactor design and scale-up/analysis, online-monitoring and industrial polymerisation processes. The participants also had the opportunity to discuss the polymerisation development and process problems (which they had encountered in the plant or research) with the speaker during the seminar.
