Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) Strengthens Community-Driven Research Through Citizen Science Initiative

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) continues to advance its commitment to Open Science through its Citizen Science initiative, officially launched as part of the University's Open Science movement in November 2024. The initiative aims to strengthen the connection between academic research and society by encouraging active public participation in scientific discovery, knowledge sharing, and community-based research activities.

Citizen Science is a collaborative approach that enables researchers, communities, government agencies, industry partners, municipal councils, schools, and the public to work together in addressing real-world challenges through research and innovation. Through this initiative, UTP seeks to make scientific research more accessible, inclusive, and impactful by opening opportunities for community members to contribute to research activities, data collection, field observations, environmental monitoring, and knowledge creation.

Although the formal Citizen Science initiative was introduced under UTP's Open Science framework in 2024, the concept itself has been embedded within the University's culture for many years. Numerous academic staff, researchers, and faculty members have actively engaged communities through outreach programmes, field studies, educational workshops, scientific expeditions, environmental projects, school engagement activities, and industry-community collaborations.

The Citizen Science initiative provides a platform to consolidate and strengthen these efforts under a unified framework, creating greater visibility and opportunities for collaboration across diverse stakeholder groups. By connecting institutional research with societal needs, UTP aims to promote evidence-based decision-making, improve public understanding of science, and support sustainable community development.

Through strategic partnerships with government agencies, private sectors, municipal councils, educational institutions, and local communities, UTP Citizen Science encourages co-creation of knowledge and fosters a culture of shared responsibility in addressing environmental, technological, social, and sustainability-related challenges.

The initiative aligns with UTP's vision of becoming a leading institution in research and innovation while contributing meaningfully to societal well-being. It also supports national and global aspirations for Open Science by making research more transparent, participatory, and beneficial to society.

Moving forward, UTP plans to expand Citizen Science activities through community engagement programmes, collaborative research projects, awareness campaigns, stakeholder workshops, and digital platforms that enable wider participation in scientific research and innovation.

UTP Citizen Science represents a step towards democratizing science, where knowledge is not only created for society but also with society.
