TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL: 7
BRIEF TECHNOLOGY
LENFLOC™ is a natural-based product. It could replace alum in water treatment process. It does not contain any trace of aluminum or ferric ions or potential presence of acrylamide monomer which is carcinogenic. Thus, the sludge is not categorised under SW204 and easy to manage.
The product is derived from waste product and underwent physical-chemical preparation to enhance its efficiency. Noteworthy, it is effective at wide pH range, low dosage required, fast settling and lesser sludge produced. LENFLOC™ has filed trademark and patent.
PROBLEM STATEMENT & CURRENT ISSUES
- In microalgae and biofuel production:
- Chemicals use in microalgae harvesting potentially reduce the quality of biofuel produced from microalgae
- In water and wastewater treatment:
- Sludge with commonly used chemicals contain trace of aluminum or ferric ions. Thus, the sludge is categorised under Scheduled Waste (SW204)
- High volume of sludge production using commonly used chemicals
- High cost for sludge treatment
USEFULNESS & APPLICATION
- It is effective across the pH, from acidic to alkaline
- Two times effective than commonly used chemicals for turbidity reduction especially in alkaline condition
- Reduced up to 40% of the sludge produced, as compared to the commonly used chemicals
- Produced flocs with good settling characteristic, which can reduce up to 75% of the settling time (4 times faster), as compared to alum
- It is positively charged polymer
- It requires less than 3 min settling time to achieve over 90% microalgae harvesting efficiency
IMPACT OF THE PRODUCT
- Reduction in waste
- Improvement in water and wastewater treatment
- Improvement in microalgae harvesting
- Improvement in quality biofuel from microalgae
- Reduction in sludge production
- Reduction in volume and cost for sludge treatment
MARKET POTENTIAL
- All water and wastewater treatment plants
- All microalgae related work for biofuel, animal feed, food for future
