Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) once again retained its position as the nation's number one private university in the recent QS Asia University Rankings 2020.  The university successfully rose 17 places from last year, taking the 82nd place.  With this achievement, UTP was ranked in the top 15% out of 557 published institutions in the rankings and the only Malaysia's private university in the top 100.

The 82nd position was by a clear margin the university's highest achievement in the QS Asia University Rankings.  Since its debut in 2014, the university has been showing steady progress and improving significantly by jumping 109 places.

UTP received the highest score in the nation for two indicators, papers per faculty which assess the number of research papers published per faculty member and the number of international faculty members.

Overall in Malaysia, UTP was ranked 6th after Universiti Malaya, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

The QS Asia list compares over 550 universities and ranks them based on 11 indicators namely academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, international research network, citations per paper and papers per faculty, staff with a PhD, proportion of international faculty and proportion of international students, as well as proportion of inbound exchange students and proportion of outbound exchange students.
