More than 450 participants from schools, universities and international institutions took the stage at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) during the Festival of Colours of the World (FESCO) 2026, transforming the campus into a vibrant celebration of cultural performances and emerging talent.
Now in its 17th edition, FESCO 2026 was organised by the UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG) with the support of the Talent Empowerment Unit under the Student Affairs Department. The festival reinforced its standing as one of Malaysia's leading student-led cultural festivals.
Featuring 40 competing teams, the festival presented a diverse showcase of dance traditions, cultural heritage and artistic expression from Malaysia and beyond. The participation of international institutions enriched the festival experience, creating opportunities for cultural exchange and the sharing of artistic perspectives.
FESCO's growing international profile is strengthened through its association with the Federation of International Dance Festivals (FIDAF), underscoring its role as a platform for cultural exchange and artistic collaboration beyond national borders.
Beyond the stage, FESCO continues to play an important role in identifying and nurturing young talent in the performing arts. The festival provides participants from schools and higher education institutions with opportunities to develop their creativity, build confidence and gain exposure on a larger platform.
The festival also reflects UTP's commitment to empowering young talent while promoting a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity. In a world increasingly shaped by technology and rapid change, cultural understanding remains an essential human capability, complementing the technical expertise and global outlook needed to thrive in the future.
At the heart of the festival is the UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG), established in 2002 to promote Malaysia's cultural richness through performance arts. Over the years, UPAG has represented UTP and Malaysia at numerous events locally and internationally, strengthening its role as a cultural ambassador.
The event was officiated by Perak Department of Culture and Arts (JKKN) Director Hisham Mat Husien. Also present was FIDAF Chairman for Asia Dr Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, UTP Vice President of the Office of Advancement, Strategic Communication and Alumni Relations and UTP Vice Provost (Student Affairs) Saravanan Muthiah.
The organisation of large-scale events such as FESCO also provides students with valuable hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, communication and project management, complementing their academic journey with practical skills.
While UTP is widely recognised for its strengths in engineering and technology, it continues to emphasise the importance of arts, culture and heritage as part of a holistic educational experience.
Through platforms such as FESCO, the university remains committed to nurturing graduates who are innovative, culturally grounded and prepared to contribute meaningfully in an increasingly interconnected world.
