We are proud to announce a significant milestone in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS’ (UTP) innovation and commercialisation journey. Reliabilitology Sdn Bhd (RSB), a graduate of UTP’s UToPIA programme, has officially signed a licensing agreement with the university to commercialise the Smart Crack Technology Instrument (SCTI).
The document exchange took place on 2 May 2025 between UTP, represented by Associate Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Fadzil B Hassan, and Ts. Mohamed Faisal Ismail, Director of Reliabilitology Sdn Bhd. The session was followed by inspiring remarks from Dr. Fadzil and a brief discussion on RSB’s business plan and growth strategy to serve the market.
This marks the first successful technology licensing deal by a UToPIA startup, underscoring the programme’s impact in transforming university research into high-value market solutions.
Developed by UTP researcher Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Rahim Othman, SCTI is a cutting-edge instrument designed to detect and assess crack propagation in industrial assets. Through the UToPIA bootcamp programme, RSB refined its business model, validated market potential, and successfully positioned SCTI for industry deployment, paving the way for real-world impact in the reliability and asset integrity sector.
The signing of this licensing agreement highlights UTP’s strong commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry by enabling technology-based startups to flourish. It also reflects the university’s growing innovation ecosystem, where ideas are nurtured, accelerated, and transformed into commercial success stories.
Congratulations to the team at Reliabilitology Sdn Bhd, the SCTI technical team, and all UTP stakeholders who contributed to this landmark achievement. Your success sets a promising precedent for future UToPIA startups and reinforces UTP’s role as a leader in technology transfer and entrepreneurial excellence.
