Students from the IED programme at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) made a strong showing at ITEX 2026, demonstrating how early-stage engineering education can translate into tangible, real-world innovation.

Competing in the World Young Inventors Exhibition (WYIE) category for participants under 21, the team presented three student-developed projects and secured:

  • Two Gold Awards
  • Two Best Invention Awards
  • One Silver Award

But beyond the medals, the experience highlights something more significant: the ability of young engineers to move from concept to creation, and from classroom learning to applied problem-solving.

Participation in ITEX has already led to meaningful academic outcomes, including the students’ first copyright filing and an upcoming conference paper submission scheduled for August 2026—early indicators of their engagement in the broader innovation and research ecosystem.

What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the scale of student involvement. A total of 20 students—representing 40% of the cohort—were directly engaged in the development process. Working in teams, they navigated challenges in design, prototyping, and validation, while gaining exposure to intellectual property processes and research communication.

All three projects were initiated and developed independently by the students, going well beyond the scope of formal coursework. This reflects a learning environment that encourages experimentation, self-directed exploration, and interdisciplinary thinking—key elements in preparing future-ready engineers.

Notably, these projects were not featured during INDEX 2026 earlier this year, underscoring the breadth of innovation taking place within the programme that extends beyond formal institutional showcases.

Together, these outcomes signal the growing strength of UTP’s experiential learning approach—one that prioritises hands-on discovery, fosters innovation from an early stage, and equips students to contribute meaningfully to technological and societal challenges.
