Department Chair's Foreword

Welcome to the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering is at the heart of the technologies shaping our future. From semiconductors, artificial intelligence, communications and embedded systems to robotics, renewable energy, autonomous systems, and intelligent digital infrastructure, electrical and electronic engineers are enabling the transformation of industries and societies worldwide.

At Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering has built a strong reputation for producing highly competent engineers who combine rigorous technical knowledge with innovation, leadership, and industry readiness. Our academic strengths span power and energy systems, electronics, microelectronics and semiconductor technologies, embedded and intelligent systems, communications, computer engineering, robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies. Supported by active research groups and close collaboration with industry, we continue to contribute to technological advancement while addressing national and global challenges.

Future-Ready Education for a Rapidly Evolving Industry

Beginning with the September 2026 intake, our Bachelor of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Bachelor of Computer Engineering programmes introduce a significantly enhanced curriculum designed to meet the rapidly changing needs of the electrical, electronics and semiconductor industries. Developed through extensive consultation with industry leaders, alumni, professional bodies and academic partners, the curriculum reflects Malaysia's strategic aspiration to strengthen high-value design, development and innovation capabilities within the E&E and semiconductor ecosystem.

Beyond strong engineering fundamentals, students will gain early exposure to semiconductor technologies, artificial intelligence, embedded intelligence, digital systems and emerging engineering applications. New courses and specialisation pathways in areas such as Applied AI Systems, Intelligent Robotics, Next Generation Communications, and Semiconductor Technologies provide students with opportunities to develop expertise in the technologies driving Industry 4.0 and the digital economy. AI is no longer treated as a standalone topic but is progressively embedded throughout the curriculum, equipping graduates with the skills to design intelligent engineering solutions across multiple domains.

Industry at the Centre of Everything We Do

One of the defining strengths of our department is the deep integration of industry throughout the educational journey.

Industry partners contribute actively to curriculum development through Industry Advisory Panels, strategic partnerships and continuous engagement, ensuring our programmes remain relevant to emerging technologies and workforce needs. Their involvement continues throughout programme delivery via adjunct lectures, industrial seminars, Final Year Project co-supervision, capstone project assessment, external examiners and collaborative research initiatives.

This close partnership enables students to learn directly from practising engineers while developing practical skills, professional judgement and industry perspectives that enhance their employability upon graduation.

Research, Innovation and Lifelong Learning

Beyond our undergraduate programmes, the department offers vibrant postgraduate research opportunities across diverse fields of electrical and electronic engineering. Our researchers work closely with industry, government agencies and international collaborators to address challenges in semiconductor technologies, intelligent systems, renewable energy, advanced communications, embedded computing, robotics, sensors, Internet of Things, and digital engineering.

We are equally committed to lifelong learning through professional development programmes, executive education, industrial training and specialised short courses that support engineers and professionals in continuously upgrading their knowledge throughout their careers.

For working professionals seeking to advance their careers without interrupting their employment, the department offers the Master of Science in Electronic Systems Engineering (Open & Distance Learning, ODL). The MSc in ESE is designed for working professionals who wish to upskill while maintaining their careers. Delivered fully online, the programme can be completed in 1.5 years, enabling students to learn from anywhere in the world. Developed in close alignment with the evolving needs of the electrical, electronics, and semiconductor industries, the curriculum equips graduates with advanced knowledge in modern electronic systems, emerging technologies, and engineering innovation, supporting Malaysia's ambition to strengthen its high-value E&E and semiconductor ecosystem.
