UTP wins Chemical Car Competition (11 – 12 April 2014)
UTP’s Chem-E Car team emerged the overall champion in the 3rd Indonesia Chem-E Car Competition held 11 and 12 April 2014 at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Surabaya, Indonesia.
In the competition, UTP competed against 11 teams from Indonesia. UTP was the only team in Malaysia who advanced to the final stage as other teams from Malaysia, India, Iran and Singapore did not pass the preliminary round.
The Chem-E-Car–competition consists of two parts, the poster presentation and car racing.
For the car racing, each team is required to design and construct a chemically powered car within certain size constraints. The car must be designed so that it can travel within the specified distance and carry a specific load. The goal of the competition is to have the car stops closest to the specified finish line.
In addition, teams must also present their ideas and mechanism for the car racing in the poster presentation.
UTP car, named Vermi Energizer 4.0, is powered by vermi battery and used hydrogen peroxide decomposition as a stopping mechanism. It can last about 12 hours at a constant speed of 0.28 m/s, and cover a distance of 12.1km. In terms of its performance, it only recorded 2% of error, the lowest in the competition.
Members of the UTP Chem-E car team were Muhammad Shafiq Mohamed Ariff, Ng Tze Yi, Deivankumar Chandran, Cheryl Kok Hui Ying and Lim Wen Khai. As the champion, the team walked away with IDR 10 million rupiah (or equivalent to RM 3210). They also won 2nd place in the poster presentation.
