UTP sets up Huawei Lab (6 May 2014)
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) recently established key partnerships in training and development with Huawei and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) through the setting up of Huawei University Teaching Laboratory (HUTL) at UTP.
This lab is aptly called ‘UTP-Huawei Communications Laboratory’ (UHCL) with the aim of accommodating both UTP and Huawei’s defined training and research strategies.
The UHCL was jointly officiated today at the university’s campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar by UTP’s Vice Chancellor, Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim, MDeC’s Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Ng Wan Peng and Vice President of Huawei Malaysia (Enterprise Business Department), Mr. Martin Fan Yong Ping. All three penned their signatures on a plaque to symbolise their commitment in providing high-level of technical trainings.
The MoU which provides the framework for the setting up of a HUTL at UTP had been signed earlier between UTP, Huawei and MDeC on 14 June 2012, in conjunction with the official opening of Huawei Malaysia’s Global Training Centre in Cyberjaya.
This collaboration led to the offering of Huawei Certified Datacom Associates (HCDA) certification programme at UTP. Its specific objective is to develop talent and certified professionals in the ICT-related areas to UTP undergraduate students, as well as to support the need for up-skilling training requirements for local communities in the northern part of Perak.
“To date, UHCL has produced 38 HCDA certified students from its first batch in September 2013, and we expect to produce the second batch of about 36 students in May 2014. We will open this certification programme to communities outside UTP, once the proposed operating model for them is ready to be implemented,” said Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim.
The UHCL is also expected to see an enhancement from the view-point of university-industry collaboration in driving cutting edge research to meet market demand as well as to support local industries and communities through the joint research effort between UTP and Huawei. This possibility will be explored by jointly enhancing the existing UHCL with the industry’s standard measurement and testing equipment to support the teaching and R&D activities at UTP.
“With UTP’s partnership with Huawei, there are many R&D opportunities for UTP to work with, especially in the areas where they can directly contribute to the building of intelligent society in Malaysia,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Halabi Hasbullah, UTP’s Director of Mission-Oriented-Research (MOR) of Intelligent Cities.
“We are very pleased to partner with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. Huawei is a leading global ICT solution provider and our products have been widely deployed in the national ICT infrastructures in Malaysia. We have the right technology and we are keen to transfer our knowledge to the local talents. We also hope this collaboration will inspire more innovative technologies that can bring real benefit to the technology as well as economy development in Malaysia,” said Martin Fan.
“MDeC has over the years strategised and formulated various programmes aimed at meeting the demand of the current and future workforce requirements of the local ICT industry. Our partnership with UTP is in line with the National ICT Initiative via MSC Malaysia, for undergraduates and fresh graduates to be up-skilled and equipped with industry-relevant skills and expertise whilst addressing the ICT industry’s talent needs,” said Ng Wan Peng.
Also present at the event were UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohamad Hani, UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Tn. Hj. Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, UTP Dean of Faculty of Science and Information Technology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmad Kamil Mahmood, UTP Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, UTP Head of Computer and Information Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jafreezal Jaafar, Head of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rosdiazli Ibrahim, as well as delegates from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).

The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) was incorporated in 1996 to strategically advise the Malaysian Government on legislation, policies and standards for ICT and multimedia operations as well as to oversee the development of MSC Malaysia, the platform to nurture the growth of Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the IT industry, while attracting participation from global ICT companies to invest in, and develop cutting edge digital and creative solutions in Malaysia.
