​UTP Promotes Learning IT Through Multimedia and Mobile Application Competitions (21 - 22 June 2014)​

 

51 secondary and primary students from Kinta Selatan, Perak Tengah and Manjung districts, Perak took part in the Little Programmers and Mobile Apps Challenge organised by the Department of Computer & Information Sciences (DCIS), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).

Both programmes were held to promote the learning of IT using fun and interactive methods among schools students.


 


SJK (T) Changkat, SK Simpang Empat, SK Bota Kanan, SK Sri Iskandar and SK Sri Tronoh participated in the Little Programmers Challenge.  The challenge enabled primary students, aged 10-12 years, to learn computer programming using readily available and easy-to-learn programming software known as SCRATCH.

 



To win the challenge, participants were required to develop a multimedia application using SCRATCH.  They were judged based on their creativity, application of theories and presentation skills.

Rhyss Haiqal Nor Idham and Amirul Haris Jasirolnizam from SK Sri Iskandar (Team A) were announced as the Champion.  Amirul Haris was also named as the Best Scratcher.

First runner up winners were Muhammad Hasbul Irfaan Hasbullah and Mohamad Zarul Arif Mohd Yusof from SK Bota Kanan (Team A) while Yusuf Azman and Fikree Iskandar Daud from SK Sri Iskandar (Team C) were the second runner up.


 


Taking part in the Mobile Apps Challenge were SM Raja Perempuan Taayah and SMK Sultan Yussuf. The challenge provided opportunity for secondary school students, aged 16 and 17, to apply their science and technology skills, knowledge and creativity to develop an original mobile application concept by using AppInventor software.


 


Nor Firzah Mohd Tapkir and Amira Syuhada Anuar Sallehuddin from SM Raja Perempuan Taayah (Team A) were declared the winners for their most creative mobile application.

Muhammad Najmi Nadzrul Rizal and Wan Muhammad Fahmi Wan Zainuddin (SMK Sultan Yussuf) were the first runner up while Siti Aisyah Ismail and Syakirah Rozali from SM Raja Perempuan Taayah (Team B) were the second runner up.  Best AppInventor Award went to Wan Muhammad Fahmi.


 


Associate Professor Dr Jafreezal Jaafar, Head of DCIS in his closing remark said that the department will organise such events annually as its signature events in the future, to continuously promote the learning of IT to school students.

Also present at the event was En Mohamad Ishak Mohamad, Assistant Director of the Academic Management Sector, Perak Education Department.
