UTP Bagged Three Prizes in the Highest Early Strength Concrete Cube Competition (HESCCC) 2013 (19 - 20 April 2013)

UTP team bagged three prizes in the 2013 Highest Early Strength Concrete Cube Competition (HESCCC) held at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam.   The event was organised by American Concrete Institute (ACI) – KL Chapter in collaboration with Concrete Society of Malaysia (CSM) and UiTM, Shah Alam from 19 to 20 April 2013.

36 teams consisting of educational institutions and renowned industrial organisations participated in this competition, which included Universiti Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM),  Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), International Islamic University Malaysia, UiTM Shah Alam, Lafarge Concrete Malaysia, BASF Malaysia and CML Concrete Materials Laboratory Sdn Bhd, among others.

The competition is held with the following objectives:

  • To encourage students, researchers and industry players to put their creativity and technical skills to come up with an optimum cost concrete of the highest early strength
  • To create awareness on the possibility to produce the highest early strength concrete
  • To serve as a platform for networking between students, NGOs and concrete industry players

Leading the UTP team was Professor Ir. Dr. Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin, UTP Dean of Faculty of Engineering.

UTP team came up with their own mix design that contained cement, cement replacement material, coarse aggreagate, fine aggregate, water, admixture, accelerator and others to produce high early strength concrete.  They used Microwave Incinerator Rice Husk Ash (MIRHA – a product invented and patented by UTP), fly ash, and silica fume as cement replacement material in their mix design.  At the end, they successfully produced and recorded the highest early strength concrete of 105MPa, while other competitors namely Lafarge Concrete Malaysia only attained 70MPa and UTM with 53MPa.

UTP team’s overall achievements are:
