Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established on 10 January 1997 and is a leading private university in Malaysia. 

The campus is built on a 400 hectare (1,000 acres) site strategically located at Bandar Seri Iskandar, Perak Darul Ridzuan, Malaysia. The university is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS, the national oil and gas company of Malaysia.

UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  It aims to produce well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities. 

The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries, locally and abroad, on six research focus and niche areas.  They are self-sustainable building, transport infrastructure, health analytics, hydrocarbon recovery, contaminant management and autonomous system.

UTP has produced more than 15,000 graduates and currently has an enrolment of over 1,200 foundation students, 6,000 undergraduates and 1,200 postgraduates from more than 60 countries around the world.   

UTP has continuously achieved numerous national and international recognition in only 21 years of its establishment:

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)

  • The first and only private university in Malaysia to be rated a maximum 5-star overall rating in the QS StarsTM University Rating System.
  • Climbed 80 places into the rank range of 521-530 in the QS World University Rankings 2019 from its previous position of 601-650 range.
  • The only private university in Malaysia placed in the top 100 in the QS Asia University Rankings 2019. It now ranked 99th compared to 101st last year.  The 99th position is, by a clear margin, the University’s highest achievement in the QS Asia University Rankings.  Since its debut in 2014, the university has improved significantly in the rankings by leapfrogging 92 places. UTP's ranking results showed significant improvements in four indicators, namely papers per faculty, international faculty and inbound and outbound exchange students which placed the university into the top 100.  UTP is the best performing university in papers per faculty as it is placed 74th regionally.
  • Advanced 20 places in the QS Top 50 under 50 2019.   It is now ranked at the 71-80 band, improving its position from the 91-100 band last year. The ranking is based on the world's best universities that are less than 50 years old. 
  • Leapt 88 places to 145th from its previous 233rd place in the QS World University Rankings by Broad Subject of Engineering and Technology 2018. UTP was ranked in 4 subjects, Chemical Engineering was ranked Top 150, Top 200 for Mechanical Engineering, Top 250 for Electrical Engineering and Top 300 for Computer Science & Information System.

Times Higher Education (THE)

  • Made the list in The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-2017 for the first time and is ranked in the 601-800 band.
  • Leaped 36 places from its 2017 performance and is now ranked at 114th in the THE Asia University Rankings 2018.
  • Retained its position between the 151 - 200 range in the THE Young University Rankings 2019.  
  • Ranked at 131-140 in the THE Asia-Pacific University Rankings 2017.
  • Ranked 77th in the THE Emerging Economies Rankings 2018 (previously known as BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings).  The university jumped 14 places from its previous ranking of 91st in 2017.  
    This placed UTP among the top 80 of the best universities in the developing world.  Within Malaysia, UTP is ranked 2nd after University of Malaya ranked 27.  

Malaysia Research Assessment Rating System (MyRA)

  • Retained its six-star rating (the highest performance level) in MyRA for its research development and commercialisation programmes for 2018.

Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education (SETARA)

  • Rated Six Star or outstanding status in SETARA 2017.
