UTP-MARii Collaboration for Embedded Systems Nexus at UTP

As part of its national masterplan, MARii is looking at establishing a COE for embedded systems, IC design and sensor development for Malaysia to have in-house talent and capabilities for IR 4.0 readiness.

MARii is offering UTP to jointly set up the COE to serve as a platform for collaboration between universities and industries to spearhead the development . Currently, there is a lack of this capability within the country and there is no available facility in UTP which provides centralised services for the development of electronic controller, data acquisition system, electronic boards and embedded sytems for academic research. 

Researchers have to source from external vendors. Having an in-house embedded lab facility can reduce capital outflow, improve development of time, facilitate experimental validation and field implementation, improve technology readiness level (TRL), reduce prototyping anxiety, encourage research commercialisation and provide over-the-counter consultation and short-term services for UTP's internal research. Therefore, research centres across UTP may be collaborating with industry but commercialisation initiatives may be hampered by lack of close linkage with industry.

A national COE with investment from a goverment agency such as MARii, which has strong affiliation with industry, can bridge this gap by encouraging researchers to work closely with companies from early stages of research until completion, to ensure alignment of research with actual industry and market demands, with a value-added focus of generating indigenous technology for the nation.
