​UTP Received Merit Award at the BSN Inter-Varsity Social Venture Challenge 2012

UTP social-venture business proposal entitled “Eco-Cement” was awarded the Merit Award at the final round of the Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Inter-Varsity Social Venture Challenge (SVC) 2012 on 27 November 2012.

Held at Intercontinental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, UTP’s project was short-listed from nearly 70 submissions from all public and private learning institutions across the nation.  Out of this number, only 6 teams were shortlisted and chosen  to present their project to panels comprising financial institution representatives, industrial experts, social-venture investors and media representatives.

Open to all undergraduates students, the BSN Inter Varsity SVC is an activity initiated by BSN as part of its Social Corporate Responsibility commitment.  In line with BSN’s mandated role, BSN’s social venture challenge is an avenue for the youth to explore and conceptualise ideas to create a feasible and sustainable venture for the benefit of the community.

UTP’s “Eco-Cement” is based on Professor Ir Dr Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin’s, UTP Dean of Engineering research work on paddy husks which was repackaged to be commercialized specially for this competition.

UTP team were represented by the following students :

  • Devashnee R. Selvanathan (Final Year, Information and Communication Technology programme)
  • Wan Petra Anisha Bt. Wan Muhaimin (Third Year, Chemical Engineering programme)
  • Panjaabegesan a/l Ragupathy (Third Year, Mechanical Engineering programme)
  • Lee Jia Liang (Third Year, Civil Engineering programme)

They walked away with a cash prize of RM 5,000 and RM 2,000 worth of book vouchers.
