15 members of UTP Bhangra Group (Gajjdi Awani) showcased their dancing talents and emerged victorious in the Artistry in Rhythm 2012 dance competition held at HELP College of Arts and Technology on 1 December 2012.
This national dance competition featured three main categories which were contemporary, modern and cultural dance. For the cultural category, it consisted of Malay, Chinese and Indian dance.
With participation from 10 institutions of higher learning across Malaysia, the event was aimed to encourage and educate youths to appreciate various cultures through dance.
As the champion, UTP Bhangra Group (Gajjdi Awani) walked away with RM1500 and a trophy. Other winners included Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (1st Runner Up) and Kolej Komuniti Banting, Selangor (2nd Runner Up).
UTP’s Bhangra Group was established in 2000 with the purpose of promoting Bhangra, a type of Punjabi folk dance, to the public.
In 2011, it was crowned as the champion in the Dhiirathi Nakshatra 2011, an annual dance and singing competition organized by Indian Cultural and Language Society of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Kampar Branch, Perak.
