INVENTION DISCLOSURE TO REO FOR PROMOTION PURPOSES
Title 1:Title of Invention : Fuel briquette as an alternative solid fuel
Inventor’s Name : Ir Mohd Shiraz Aris & Chin Yee Sing (other team members are: Norzila bt Mohd Isa, Khalid M Sabil)
Programme : Mechanical Engineering Department
GENERAL DESRCIPTION OF THE INVENTION (Please state the background and problem statement of the invention – how does it improve the existing technology/devices/tools)
Malaysia is one of the world’s greatest palm oil exporter and lots of oil palm waste is generated from this sector. The fuel briquette utilizes the waste generated and converts the waste into a useful form – fuel briquette. The fuel briquette is an alternative solid fuel which involves very simple manufacturing process.
- INDUSTRIAL APPICABILITY (Please state the applicability of the invention to the industry – identify the industry and state how the inventions add value to such industry as compared to the existing practice.
The solid fuel is well suited for power plants to fire their boilers. For instance, power plants using coal may consider using the briquette as the secondary fuel to be co-fired with coal. This will eliminate the carbon emission from the plant since the biomass content in the briquette is deemed carbon-neutral. Palm oil mills are encouraged to use this briquette because the waste generated from the mills could be utilized again in the boiler as fuel. This will help in saving cost to purchase fuel.

Title2 : NGV Refuelling System by AP Dr. Mohd Ibrahim Abd Mutallib
General Description of Product
In an NGV station, the natural gas is transferred into vehicle cylinders by pressure differential. If only the differential storage pressure was used to transfer the gas, then the flow would ceased when the storage pressure and the vehicle pressure has been equalized. One of the alternative solutions to reduce the time and energy losses during refueling is by introducing an optimum filling schedule using a series of sources with increasing pressures. However the problem lies in finding a suitable method that could automatically and optimally switch the refueling source from lower to higher pressure bank sequentially as the vehicle storage tank pressure increases. Alternatively, the optimum filling could be done using a variable discharge pressure compressor to compress the natural gas directly to the NGV vehicle. The compressor is capable of varying its discharged pressure to ensure optimal pressure drive while achieving optimum usage of electricity. Nevertheless, with the current infrastructure in place, modifying the refueling station in order to accommodate variable pressure compressor may lead to high cost. A more sensible solution is to introduce system and devices that could improve the refueling process with reasonable cost to ensure return in investment could be made.
The Industrial Applicability of Product
The invention has been applied in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling station to transfer natural gas from multiple banks of source pressure to various initial pressures inside Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV). Results show that the invention has reduced filling time while increased filling capacity at storage aboard of NGV. By implementing in an actual CNG refueling operation, it would provide saving in term of energy consumed by CNG compressor and could improve NGV congestion problem. Collaborators are needed to verify the applicability of invention in other practical situations i.e, transferring natural gas from extreme condition in shortest possible time.
