STRATEGIC ALLIANCE AGREEMENT SIGNING CEREMONY BETWEEN UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS AND QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST
16 March 2007
The signing of a Strategic Alliance Agreement between Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Queen’s University Belfast marked another important milestone for UTP in its quest to attain academic and R&D excellence. The event, which was attended by the Rector of UTP; Dr Zainal Abidin bin Hj Kasim, the Vice Chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast Northern Ireland, United Kingdom; Professor Peter Gregson, and senior officials from PETRONAS Research and Technology Division, Queens University Belfast and UTP took place at the campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar on Friday ,16 March 2007.

The establishment of this alliance between the two leading institutions of higher learning paved way for collaboration which covers capability development, technical projects, education and R&D. In particular, the research and development activities will focus on the area of green technology involving the use of green chemistry; which is indeed timely given the numerous environmental problems that are currently faced by the industries worldwide.
Through this collaboration, UTP researchers will be able to access state-of-the-art knowledge in ionic liquid, industrial catalyst and some advanced environmental technologies that have been developed by Queen’s University Belfast. More importantly, with the formation of this alliance, access to established R&D global networking in the area of green technology will be made available.

It is strongly hoped that this collaboration will not only benefit UTP and PETRONAS but also other local Malaysian institutions of higher learning in general, as UTP will become the window for other local institutions to develop partnership in R&D with UTP and Queen’s University Belfast in the area of green technology.
