UTP Team emerged as champion in ‘The National Competition in Engineering and Innovation 2008: Floating Tower Competition’ which was organised by Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam in conjunction with the ‘International Conference on Civil and Infrastructure Engineering (ISCIE’08)’. It was held from 11-12 June 2008 at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM Shah Alam. A total of 36 teams from 9 institutions of higher learning in Malaysia had participated in this competition. The teams were from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UMS), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP), Universiti Pertahanan Malaysia (UPNM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UNIMAS).
The overall results of the competition are as follows:. The objective of the competition was to determine the greatest efficiency failure load/weight of the tower . The tower must be constructed using only straws (max 200 pieces), empty bottles of 500 ml mineral water (max 8 nos) and masking tape. The number of students in a group is limited to four and they need to build the tower including the presentation materials within the stipulated time period (3 hours).
