UTP IN MALAYSIA BOOK OF RECORDS FOR HIGHEST NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS TAKING PART IN UTP OPEN CHESS COMPETITION 2006

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was once again in the limelight as the UTP Open Chess Competition 2006 managed to gather the highest number of participants. A total of 960 participants took part in the tournament that was held on Sunday, 13 August 2006 in conjunction with UTP Convofair 2006. Convofair is an annual event held in conjunction with the university’s convocation.
The event was officiated and witnessed by Tuan Hj. Muhamat Roli b. Hj. Hassan, Sector Head, Human Resource Management, Perak State Education Department who represented the Director of Perak State Education Department.
This year's event created another history when it was included in the Malaysia Book of Records, as having a higher number of participants than the previous record by more than 200 entries. The competition was divided into 5 categories - Under 12, Under 15, Under 18, University Students and Open Category. The participants included individuals from the government & private agencies, schools, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris, Kuala Lumpur Infrastructure University College, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi Mara and also partipants as far as Singapore. 7 UTP students were ranked among the top 3 - 11 for the University Category and 10 UTP students were ranked among the top 21 - 50 for the Open Category.
