A total of 80 companies participated in the Technology, Education & Career 2008 (TEC 2008) held at the Chancellor Complex of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) on 1 and 2 April 2008. This programme was jointly organised by the Student Representative Council and the Career Advisory Services Unit. The objective of this event was to create awareness among UTP students as well as other students on learning opportunities, job recruitment and the latest available technology. The event was officially opened by Y.B. Datuk Ir. Hj. Idris b. Hj. Haron, the new Deputy Minister of Higher Education. In his speech, Datuk Ir. Hj. Idris was impressed with UTP's excellent facilities and the high quality of graduates that the university produced each year. He also commended UTP's eight-month Industrial Internship Programme and encouraged all institutions of higher learning to also take up this initiative. He stressed that graduates should improve on their communication and entrepreneurial skills in order to secure jobs immediately upon graduation. Datuk Ir. Hj. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, Rector and CEO of UTP as well as UTP management, exhibitors, staff and students. In his welcoming speech, Dr. Zainal Abidin stressed that TEC 2008 was aimed at providing an avenue to help students make one of the most difficult decisions in their life i.e. selecting the best career option for them. Explaining, he said that TEC 2008 would to an extent, assist students in getting first hand information on the various participating industries that would help facilitate them in their career decision. Besides the UTP community, approximately 1500 visitors from other universities, polytechnics, secondary and primary schools also attended this event. Among the companies that took part in TEC 2008 were PETRONAS, Schlumberger, Murphy Oil, SBM Offshore, duGeo Solutions, Ranhill Worley, Orogenic, WIM, Baker Hughes, Talisman, HESS, MMC, Weatherford, Cameron, Global Offshore, and Ramunia.
