NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE (NUS) ARTS FESTIVAL 2008

22 MARCH 2008

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS Orchestra Chinese Musical (UTPOCM) group consisting of 34 UTP students was invited as guest performers in the recent Melodious Affinity Concert held at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 22 March 2008. Melodious Affinity is a Chinese Orchestra Concert organised by the NUS Chinese Orchestra in conjunction with NUS Art Festival 2008 which is held annually. NUS Arts Festival is NUS’s flagship arts season to showcase its campus talents – students, staff and alumni – and their unique partnerships with industry professionals. For 2008, the theme of the festival was “Arts + Medicine” where apart from various programmes carried out ranging from music, dance, drama, film, visual arts, literary arts, the positive impact of arts on wellbeing and holistic healthcare were also introduced in order to spark off creative works.

The guests of honour during the evening was Mr Yew Guat Kwang (Member of Parliament - Aljunied GRC), UTP’s Rector, YBhg. Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj. Kasim accompanied by the UTP delegation consisting of Tuan Hj. Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, Director of Student Services, En. Muhd Syazwan Amarjit Abdullah and En. Ahmad Pengiran Abdullah, both from Student Supports Services Department (SSSD).

The UTP Orchestra Chinese Musical group performed 3 songs; Malay Folk Song Medley, Ode to the Red Flag Canal and Thunderstorm in Summer, under the baton of the conductor/instructor, Mr Goh Suk Liang. The whole performance by our talented students was unique with the inclusion of violin into the conventional Chinese music arrangements and was well appreciated & received a big applause by the audience which consists of the NUS students, staff and general public. One of the performers was Rusydina bt. Rashid, the only non-Chinese performer of the night and a recipient of the Special Appreciation Award 2008 in the recently concluded Sports & Co-Curricular Appreciation Night 2008. The experience, exposure and knowledge gained from the visit to NUS Art Festival 2008 would certainly be an encouragement for the group to improve and raise the overall quality of their performances.
