‘Kem Cuti Sains MRSM’, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS

MARA and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS had successfully organisedKem Cuti Sains MRSM’ on 26-28 November 2007. 

This is a collaborative programme between MARA and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. The main aim of the programme is to inculcate research culture among the upper secondary MRSM students.

Among the objectives of this program are as follows:

 

•        To instill interest in science and mathematics & science education amongst students so that they will be able to opt for a career in science and technology;

•        To inculcate research culture amongst the young generation;

•        To stimulate students’ creativity and innovation;

•        To enhance students’ self confidence;

•        To provide opportunities for students and teachers to learn about research techniques;

•        To set a platform for local scientist to impart their expertise to students & teachers efficiently;

•        To contribute towards the development of science & technology in the nation.

 

The program was called “Developing Young Scientist” and students spent 2 ½ days at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, doing hands-on research on the main theme of “Energy and Environment”. Participants were expected to design and carry out experimental work to support the main theme. Experimental work must be carried out in the assigned sub-theme group, and subsequently led towards identifying technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote healthier air quality and provide sustainable clean energy supply for the future. The experiments were able to provide some specific outputs that might be useful for deducing outcomes related to the areas as shown in the figure below.

 

 

 

Around 100 students who had completed their Form 4 at the MRSM colleges in Taiping, Besut, Pasir Salak, Jasin, Pengkalan Hulu, Alor Gajah, Langkawi, Kepala Batas, Muadzam Shah, Batu Pahat, Mersing, Serting dan Jeli were selected to attend the programme. Besides academic and research endeavour, recreational activities and motivational talk were also parts of the activities. The students were divided into 33 groups, and each group comprised of at least 3 students. At the end of the second day, students were expected to produce project reports and posters for presentation. The judging of the presentations took place on the last day of the programme, and awards were given for the best presentation, best poster, best report, best discussion and best abstract.
