| Home > News & Events > News Archive 2007 > Invention & New product Exposition 2007 INVENTION & NEW PRODUCT EXPOSITION 2007 (INPEX 2007)6 - 9 JUNE 2007AT EXPOMART, PITTSBURGH, USA Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) proved its mettle once again when its research products won a total of 5 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze in the ‘Invention & New Product Exposition 2007 (INPEX 2007)’ . The awards were presented at the 23 rd show held in Pittsburgh, USA from 6 – 9 June 2007. Out of the 7 participati ng universities from Malaysia, UTP collected the most number of gold medals.
INPEX is America ’s largest inventions trade show showcasing inventions, new products and innovations from around the world that are available to license, market or manufacture . One of the research project s led by Prof. Dr. P.A. Venkatachalam won the Best Invention of the Pacific Rim through his project entitled “Computer Cardiologist”. He also won 3 gold medals for 3 different categories i.e. Health/Fitness, Electrical/Electronics and Design (Technical). “Computer Cardiologist” is a cost effective heart murmur signal processing module (SPM) integrated with an Expert System. It can be used by general physicians in rural hospitals and rural or urban clinics under emergency cases to get expert consultation in the absence of cardiologists. Another project, ‘Series Hybrid Vehicle with Linear Generator’ led by Assoc. Prof. Dr Abdul Rashid Abdul Aziz had also won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze for Alternative Energy, Automotive and Transportation & Vehicles category respectively.
This research product is the concept demonstrator prototype of a series hybrid electric vehicle (S-HEV) with the linear generator (LG) as the on-board power generator. The linear generator developed is capable of producing electricity which can be used to power vehicle. UTP also won another gold medal through Dr Balbir Singh ’s and Dr Afza Shafie’s project entitled “Coolcap”. This is a safety helmet with an improvised cooling device mounted on the inner portion of the helmet worn by workers exposed to high temperature and humid environment. The exposition attracted participations of more than 200 research projects from 13 different countries including USA. The Malaysian delegat ion was headed by Dato’ Mohd Taib Bin Hasim, Deputy Chief Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education.
