General Description

The Sustainability Science Mission Oriented Research (SUSMOR) group leverages on the new emerging discipline in the 21st century that is “sustainability” which derives impetus from the concepts of sustainable development and environmental science including the economic and social aspects of the subject matter. Sustainable development can be defined as the development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. SUSMOR aims to integrate researchers from various disciplines and promote multi-disciplinary research practices that ensure sustainable research outcomes. SUSMOR not only harnesses science and technology research efforts but also focuses on environmentally sustainable human development. Therefore, SUSMOR also carries out outreach activities (part of University Social Responsibility - USR) in the form of action research and researchers from engineering, technological and humanities background are integrated in these activities.

Current Projects

Diverse research themes from various field of interest are being propagated in SUSMOR and the ongoing projects/researches that are being conducted at UTP are:

  • Materials characterizations
    • Utilization of waste materials in concrete
    • Geopolymer systems in bitumen, concrete and other construction materials
  • Carbon sequestration
    • The 500 acre forest at UTP is being monitored and used for carbon offset
  • Journalism Studies
    • focus on Malay World Journalism
    • Ethics and Self-regulation
  • History and Philosophy of Social Science
    • epistemology
    • media and communication theory
  • Post colonial Studies
    • Colonial Knowledge
    • Malay Occidental Discourse.
  • Banning of polystyrene on campus
    • Use of biodegradable food container at cafeterias
  • Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3R) program
    • Raise awareness of students on 3R as one of the important elements in environmental sustainability and the University to provide recycling facilities.
  • In-house composting of food wastes
    • The university to produce compost fertilizer using food wastes generated from kitchens. The compost fertilizer is used for compound/landscape
  • Groundwater Management
    • To use sensors to detect underground water movement and reuse underground water for irrigation
  • Energy  Saving
    • Energy Saving is part of operational improvement initiatives to improve building efficiency and energy cost.
  • Green Building Index
    • Pilot testing survey at UTP campus by Green Building S/B for Green Building Index (GBI) rating
  • Biodiversity Park/ Carbon Sequestration
    • Flora & fauna survey and develop inventory, identification of endangered species & protect them and convert the reserve forest to become ‘Eco-tourism’ spot for local community
  • UTP wetland
    • This wetland plays important role in improving lake water quality especially in treating untreated storm water from outside tin factories and agriculture lands.
