Regional Conference On The Humanities 2009 (RCH 2009)

The humanities form part of a sweeping arc of human learning. These disciplines – literature, philosophy, history, art, music, etc. – diverse in their manifestation, comprise a powerful force in shaping society and civilization.  Their evolution is integral to the prevailing cultural and institutional circumstances. The prevailing theme in the nation, resulting from the evolution, is the development of human capital. The nation is embedded in human capital – conceptualized and practiced in its proper contexts. The national imagination and formulation of resources for social advancement is very significant here. In this regard, it is essentially how we deal with our past and how we anticipate the future based on knowledge and action.

Managing the nation’s future demands an infinite set of qualities. And these include collective and individual intelligence, capabilities, abilities, aspirations, ethical standards, honesty, trust, emotional maturity, technical, scientific, cultural and social skills.  These elements, reposited in a visionary and transformative mindset, are maintained by enduring and overarching values positied in the humanities. However, there is still a wide frontier waiting to be explored in this context.  Investment in education, driving thought, creativity and innovation, and training is vital in developing the human capital of the nation.

The RCH 2009 conference held from February 18-19, 2009 was seen as a timely intervention in inducing new knowledge and fresh perspectives for the future. The Conference brought forth scholars and students in the social and human sciences, government policy makers, scientists, engineers and technologists, management practitioners, industry planners, educators and teachers, historians, critics, journalists and writers, composers, artists, cultural researchers, cultural planners, human resource practitioners, architects, management consultants, and motivators.

The Management and Humanities Department, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS sees its inaugural conference as a platform for reflecting and responding to latent and emerging issues and problems in the study of the Humanities in Malaysia.
