Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established in 1997 and has grown to be one of the most prominent private universities in Malaysia. UTP offers wide range of industry-relevant engineering and technology programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
UTP has produced more than 10,000 graduates and currently has an enrolment of over 6,000 undergraduates and 1,200 postgraduates from more than 50 countries around the world. UTP complements its engineering and technology programmes with quality education in the areas of management and humanities, with the aim of producing well-rounded graduates with excellent leadership qualities and communication abilities.
UTP is the only private university in Malaysia to be rated a 4-star institution by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), with a maximum five-star rating in five areas out of eight, namely employability, internationalisation, innovation, facilities and access.
UTP is also ranked in the top 200 in the 2014 QS World University Ranking by subject for Chemical Engineering. UTP is the only private university in Malaysia to be ranked in the top 200 for the 2014 QS Asia University Rankings and ranked at 335 for the QS World University Rankings under Engineering and Technology Faculty.
UTP continues to provide distinctive educational opportunities to its students with the rating of Tier 5 (Excellent) University for the year 2011 Rating System for the Malaysian Higher Education Institutions and achieved the Tier 5 for 2011
D-SETARA (Discipline-Based Rating System) in engineering.
UTP also places strong emphasis on Research and Development as it strives to achieve the status of an internationally renowned Research University. The university conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with PETRONAS and other institutions and industries locally and abroad focusing on nine niche areas which are Enhanced Oil Recovery, Carbon Dioxide Management, Deepwater Technology, Nanotechnology, Green Technology, Biomedical Technology, Hybrid Energy Systems, Intelligent Cities and Sustainable Resources. This is evident when UTP was awarded a 5-star rating by Malaysian Research Assessment Instrument for its research, development and commercialisation efforts recently.
In October 2014, UTP’s Centre of Excellence (COE), Centre for Intelligent Signal and Imaging Research was recognised by the Ministry of Education as the National Higher Institution COE focusing on biomedical image analysis with neuro chemical imaging as its research niche area.
Besides CISIR, UTP Centre of Innovative Nanostructures and Nanodevices, was also recognised as a national COE by Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry in 2011.
