MSc IN ADVANCED PROCESS CONTROL
KPT/JPS(KA 8222)12/12

MODULAR TAUGHT COURSE

INTRODUCTION

The paradigm shift in the control concept from ‘don’t rock the boat’ to driving the process to its limits of operation has seen rewards in terms of increased productivity, decreased energy usage and giveaway, and safe and smoother operation. Operating a process at or near its constraints is very difficult and requires the use of advanced process control strategies.

A master programme in Advanced Process Controls deals with the application of recent advances in process control and analysis techniques such as multivariable control, predictive control, real-time optimisation, multivariate analysis, statistical process control, artificial intelligence and process monitoring in chemical processes in order to maximise the utilisation of raw materials and energy and to provide greater reliability and safety.

Large-scale processing plants worldwide have gone in favour of implementation of advanced process control strategies with good paybacks but have experienced acute shortage of skilled manpower in this knowledge intensive area. This course has been designed to provide an insight into the area of advanced process control and produce control engineers with a good theoretical and practical knowledge.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A good Bachelors Degree in the field of Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Instrumentation from UTP or other recognised universities. Applicants with Bachelors Degree in Physics from recognised universities with a minimum of 2 years industrial experience can be considered.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Candidates may choose to obtain the MSc in Advanced Process Control either on a full-time or a part-time basis. For full-time students, they are based at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS where all the lectures are held on the campus.

The part-time mode, using extensive e-learning facilities, is well-suited for engineers and technologists who may not be able to leave their jobs for long periods at a stretch. Intensive learning support will be provided either at the University or at the students’ work location.

The programme structure is as follows:

Core Modules

1. Process Engineering

2. Dynamics and Control of Unit Operations

3. Process Optimisation

4. Advanced Process Control System Technology

5. Process Control System Design and Operations

COURSE CONTENTS

Process Engineering

The course provides necessary background of process engineering and acts as a bridging course for non-chemical engineers. This course imparts knowledge in developing the chemical process flow diagram and understanding appropriate unit operations.

Dynamics and Control of Unit Operations

The course introduces dynamic modelling and control of chemical processes. Design of control systems of typical unit operations such as distillation, reactor, heat exchanger etc., are extensively covered during the course.

Process Optimisation

The course offers various techniques to solve optimisation problems in chemical process industries especially related to operation and control.

Advanced Process Control System Technology

The course equips the students with basic and advanced control system design and analysis to handle simple to complex dynamic of chemical processes.

Process Control System Design and Operations

The course provides hands-on experiences in designing control system which includes data collection, analysis and implementation either in real plants or lab-scale experimental rigs.

MSc Dissertation

The course familiarises the students with research methods through an independent research project. It also enhances knowledge and understanding in various aspects of process control.

COURSE DURATION

1.5 years minimum (Full-time)

3 years minimum (Part-time)

MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION

English

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates with M.Sc. in Advanced Process Control are most sought after in the large scale processing plants such as oil, gas and petrochemical plants. They also have good opportunities for enhancing their career in the area of research and development and academia.
