Science for Sustainability (S4S) is the 8th Mission Oriented Research (MOR) group established in Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. As the name suggests, the research group is capitalizing on the new emerging discipline in the 21st Century that is sustainability science. Research conducted in S4S derives some impetus from the concepts of sustainable development and environmental science, at the same time incorporating the economic and social aspects of the subject matter.

Attaining sustainability will require concerted interactive efforts among disciplines, many of which have not yet recognized, and internalize the relevance of environmental issues to their main intellectual discourse. Hence, S4S aims to integrate researchers from various disciplines and promote a multi-disciplinary research practice in ensuring more sustainable research outcomes for many years to come.

S4S is also very aware that there is an increasing need for harnessing science and technology in support of efforts to achieve the goal of environmentally sustainable human development. Therefore, at S4S, besides fostering the current science and technology advancement in our research, we strongly believe society outreach activities (as part of our University Social Responsibility-USR) are also vital towards achieving this goal. In S4S, the research agenda is widely driven by what society thinks they need, not just by what scholars (read: us) think is interesting.

S4S vision is to be a leading centre of reference on science for sustainability and our missions are:

1. To provide opportunities for the pursuit of knowledge and expertise for the promotion of science for sustainability;

2. To nurture science for sustainability consciousness in communities and society through innovation, research and consultancy; and

3. To synergise knowledge in creating an ethical praxis of sustainability science to protect nature and improve the quality of life.

At presents, S4S is lead by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin from the Dept. of Civil Engineering and co-lead by Dr. Zulkipli Ghazali from the Dept. of Humanities and Management. The S4S secretariat is run by Dr. Mohd. Faris Khamidi from the Dept. of Civil Engineering and Dr. Jafreezal Jaafar from the Dept. of Computer and Information Sciences. S4S has more than 50 members from various disciplines, ranging from management, humanities, social sciences, fundamental and applied sciences, engineering and last but not least information and communication technology.
